Kolkata law college gangrape case: The alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old law student inside South Calcutta Law College on June 25 has sent shockwaves through Kolkata and sparked a growing political storm. A medical examination conducted the following night confirmed signs of physical assault on the survivor, even as the forensic probe continues.

What does the medical report say?

The medical examination was conducted at 10 pm on June 26 at Kolkata’s National Medical College. According to NDTV, the report confirms the presence of abrasion marks on the survivor’s neck and chest. While there were no visible injuries to the genital or oral areas, doctors have not ruled out sexual assault pending forensic analysis. Three swabs collected during the examination have been sent for forensic testing. A urine pregnancy test conducted during the procedure returned negative.

Investigation and arrests

Kolkata Police have constituted a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an officer of Assistant Commissioner rank to probe the incident. On Saturday, the police confirmed the arrest of a fourth suspect, a security guard at the college, bringing the total number of arrests to four.

The guard was reportedly on the premises during the time of the assault and gave “incoherent and inconsistent” answers during interrogation. CCTV footage corroborated his presence at the scene. Earlier arrests included Manojit Mishra, a former student and Trinamool Congress (TMC) affiliate, and two current students.

The assault apparently took place inside the guard’s room, which the accused allegedly forced him to vacate. The room and the nearby student union office have since been sealed by authorities.

What FIR says?

In her complaint, the survivor stated she was attacked following a meeting of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the TMC’s student wing. Around 7:30 pm, she was cornered by three individuals. Two of them reportedly stood guard while the third raped her.

“I begged him to let me go, I even touched his feet,” she told police. She alleged the accused threatened to harm her boyfriend and family if she reported the incident. During the assault, she said she was hit on the head with a hockey stick and suffered a panic attack. The accused then gave her an inhaler and continued the attack. She was released at 10:50 pm after being warned to remain silent.

Political backlash

The incident has escalated into a major political controversy. The BJP has accused the TMC of shielding Mishra, pointing to his ties with senior party leaders. Circulating photos show Mishra with TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, a Lok Sabha MP and the Chief Minister’s nephew.

Though the TMC acknowledged Mishra’s past role in the TMCP, the party has since distanced itself from him, saying legal action will take its course.
