The West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has cancelled the registration of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an official confirmed on Thursday.
Ghosh, currently in CBI custody, has been removed from the list of Registered Medical Practitioners maintained by the council, according to the official. His medical licence was revoked under provisions of the Bengal Medical Act of 1914, effectively barring him from practicing as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with financial irregularities at the hospital. He was later accused of tampering with evidence in the ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of an on-duty trainee doctor.
Aniket Mahato, a prominent figure in the junior doctors’ protests over the death of their colleague, called the decision a “victory.”
“This is a victory for our deceased sister. The cancellation of Ghosh’s medical registration should have been done the very next day of his arrest. We are happy that the West Bengal Medical Council has finally taken this step,” he said.
Ghosh was appointed principal of RG Kar Medical College in February 2021. He later resigned from the position amid the ongoing protests.
