A West Bengal court has sent two key accused in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder case to judicial custody until October 4. The Sealdah Court passed the order for former Tala Police Station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondol and ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, during a virtual hearing on Monday.
Both accused, who were previously transferred to Presidency Jail, face charges in the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the Kolkata-based institution. Sandip Ghosh also faces allegations of financial irregularities linked to his tenure at the college.
The West Bengal Medical Council had already revoked Ghosh’s medical license on September 19, following his arrest in connection with both the rape-murder case and the financial misconduct allegations. Ghosh was initially detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 2, as part of a larger probe into corruption at RG Kar Medical College.
Mondol, who was apprehended by the CBI on September 14, was suspended from his police duties four days later.
The horrific case dates back to August 9, when the body of a young trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The victim, who had been missing for hours, was later confirmed to have been sexually assaulted and murdered, leading to a widespread public outcry and protests from medical professionals demanding justice.
Following initial police investigations, several high-profile officials, including former principal Sandip Ghosh and Tala Police Station’s former officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondol, came under scrutiny due to their alleged involvement. Amid rising concerns about the handling of the case and accusations of a cover-up, the Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the CBI to ensure an impartial probe.
The case has also exposed deeper issues at the institution, with financial mismanagement and corruption allegations surfacing against Ghosh, further complicating the scandal. In response, medical students and staff have organized protests demanding accountability and systemic changes within the institution.
