Uttarakhand Police on Saturday arrested Abdul Malik, key accused in the violence that took place on February 8 in Haldwani, from Delhi.

PHQ spokesperson IG Nilesh Bharne told news agency ANI, “Abdul Malik was apprehended in Delhi regarding the violence incident on February 8 in Banbhoolpura, Haldwani. The Nainital Police are actively investigating the matter and will soon present him in court for further proceedings.”

After the violence, Malik was served a notice by Haldwani Municipal Corporation asking him to deposit Rs 2.44 crore to cover damage caused to government properties.

On February 8, violence erupted in the Banbhoolpura region of Haldwani following the demolition of an illegally constructed madrassa, which led to the death of six people, and over 100 people were injured.

On Monday, February 19, ten people were apprehended in connection with the Haldwani violence, taking the total number of arrests in the case to 58, Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prahlad Narayan Meena told reporters.
