As the monsoon persists, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended the red alert for coastal Karnataka until July 18. While the intensity of rainfall has decreased in the south interior region, the weather department has issued an orange alert there, valid until July 20.
In coastal Karnataka, rainfall is expected to diminish starting July 19, but the region will remain under the orange alert for now. The relentless rains have led to significant disruptions, prompting the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada, Laxmipriya, to open 26 care centers across the district. These centers, located in Karwar, Kumta, and Honnavar taluks, are currently sheltering 2,368 individuals affected by the floods.
The impact of the torrential rains has been severe, with reports indicating that three houses were completely destroyed, one severely damaged, and 18 partially affected. Tragically, one life was lost due to a house collapse in Karwar taluk. In case of emergencies, residents are urged to contact the district administration’s helpline at 1077 or the WhatsApp number 94835 11015.
Chikkamagaluru and Hassan districts are also grappling with the effects of the heavy rainfall. In Sringeri, roads and parking areas near the temple remain flooded, making access impossible for devotees. Meanwhile, villages in Sakleshpura taluk, including Mavinur and Kaginere, are facing power outages due to the ongoing rain. Mudslides have become increasingly common, particularly affecting National Highway 75, which was recently repaired following damage from landslides in 2018.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as they work to ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents.
