In a significant move to make cinema more affordable for the masses, the Karnataka government has decided to cap movie tickets at Rs 200 across all cinema halls and the multiplexes in the state as per a report by DNA. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced this initiative today (March 7) while presenting the stated budget for the financial year 2025-26. This regulation has been taken in view of excessively high pricing by the theatres and ensures a more inclusive movie-going experience for movie lovers across Karnataka.

The decision is similar to one taken in 2017 during Siddaramaiah’s previous term but it was later challenged in court by the multiplex owners.

Boosting Kannada film industry

In addition to the ticket price ceiling, the Chief Minister also announced a slew of initiatives to strengthen the Kannada film industry, as per the DNA report. The state government also plans officially recognised movie production as an industry. The move has been taken in order to attract more investments and for the growth of the sector. Moreover, to support Kannada cinema, the government also plans to launch its own OTT (online streaming platform). This OTT platform will be used for promoting regional films.

Siddarmaiah also announced a major infrastructure boost for the film industry. A budget of Rs 500 crore and 150 acres of land for the development of a world class film city in Mysuru has been allocated.

Beyond the world of cinema, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the people for allowing him to present his 16th budget. He highlighted his commitment to social equality and inclusive governance. He further mentioned that his approach is inspired by the teachings of Lord Budha, 12-century social reformer Basaveshwara, Dr BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.
