Despite JMM’s win, four ministers in Hemant Soren’s cabinet face election defeats
Despite the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led alliance retaining power for the second consecutive term in the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly polls, four key ministers in Hemant Soren’s government faced crushing defeats.
Health Minister Banna Gupta, who was embroiled in several controversies, lost the Jamshedpur West seat to JD(U)’s Saryu Roy by 7,863 votes. Water Resources Minister Mithilesh Thakur was defeated by BJP’s Satyendra Nath Tiwari in Garhwa by a margin of 16,753 votes. Education Minister Baidyanath Ram lost to BJP’s Prakash Ram in Latehar by a narrow 434 votes, while Social Welfare Minister Bebi Devi was defeated by JLKM’s Jairam Kumar Mahato in Dumri by 10,945 votes.
Bebi Devi had been inducted as a minister after the death of her husband, Jagarnath Mahto, in April 2023 due to Covid-19 complications. Despite these defeats, the JMM-led coalition’s flagship Maiyan Samman Yojna, which benefits 57 lakh women, played a pivotal role in the coalition’s overall victory. The scheme, providing Rs 1,000 to women aged 18-50, is set to be increased to Rs 2,500 per month.
JMM secures second term with 56 seats
In a remarkable comeback, Hemant Soren’s JMM-led alliance secured a second consecutive term in Jharkhand, winning 56 seats in the 81-member assembly, despite a fierce campaign by the BJP-led NDA, which managed only 24 seats.
Soren’s return to power was assured with the JMM-led coalition’s victory in the Jharkhand assembly elections. The alliance, consisting of the JMM, Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and the CPI-ML, collectively clinched 56 seats in the 81-member assembly.
