Jharkhand Assembly Election: Top controversies
Like every other state elections, Jharkhand elections also saw some controversies headlining the campaigns in the state. From controversial slogans to row over social media posts, Jharkhand saw it all. Some of the top controversies includes the BJP’s use of two significant slogans. The first, “Batenge Toh Katenge” (Divided we perish), was popularized by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Yogi Adityanath used it to target the Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, Sharad Pawar’s NCP, and Hemant Soren-led JMM in both Maharashtra and Jharkhand. Meanwhile, PM Modi introduced a more conciliatory call for unity: “Ek Hai Toh Safe Hai” (United we are safe). This phrase, which Modi used throughout his campaign, sought to provide a positive spin to the BJP’s message of unity while criticizing Congress for allegedly creating divisions within society.
In response to the BJP’s slogans, Congress countered with “Daroge Toh Maroge” (If you fear, you will perish) slogan. This slogan was aimed at criticizing the BJP for allegedly instilling fear among the population. The slogan was inspired by Rahul Gandhi.
Another controversy erupted over Jharkhand Congress in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir’s alleged remarks on “ghuspaithiya”. It presented the Opposition BJP an opportunity to attack the INDIA alliance over “appeasement politics” but also upset some of the allies in the ruling alliance.
In another news, after Congress and JMM complaints, the EC directed the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jharkhand to ensure the removal of the contentious post from the BJP’s official social media platforms. The EC also issued a notice seeking an explanation for the alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
