Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir said several Pakistan-based groups are once again attempting to disturb peace in the valley through social media. To counter the threat, the government has banned more than 100 accounts that were allegedly spreading provocative content in Doda and Kishtwar districts, according to CNN-News 18.
Accounts Linked to Pakistan
Officials said that among the more than 100 banned social media handles, many were being operated from across the border. These handles were allegedly trying to incite local youth following the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik. The intention was to create unrest in the valley, but the administration acted swiftly and blocked the accounts before the situation could escalate.
Why Was Mehraj Arrested?
Aam Aadmi Party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit president and MLA Mehraj Malik was arrested under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Doda. He is accused of misbehaving with the Deputy Commissioner of Doda and being associated with Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Apart from this, he is also accused of inciting youth to act as ‘Lashkar’.
Mehraj was detained on September 8 on charges of disturbing peace in Doda district. His arrest triggered violent protests in several parts of the region.
Steps to Maintain Peace
According to officials, most of the blocked accounts were traced to Facebook, followed by Instagram and then X. The government said the ban was enforced immediately to prevent violence and ensure peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. The action, they added, was necessary to safeguard law and order in the sensitive region.
