Two village defence guards (VDGs) were killed in a militant attack on Thursday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, in the Chatroo area. The victims have been identified as Kuldeep Kumar and Nazir, with the Kashmir Tigers militant group claiming responsibility for the attack.

According to district officials, both guards were reported missing earlier in the day before the militants released their photographs. Police and security forces have now intensified their presence in the area.

A senior officer mentioned that militant activity has been ongoing in the region for months, with incidents of exchange of gunfire between militants and security forces during the recent Assembly elections, The Indian Express reported.

Sources revealed that the two guards had taken livestock to the forests at Kuntwara in Chatroo in the morning but failed to return by evening. Before the local villagers contacted the police, the militants circulated photographs of the two, along with a statement confirming their deaths.

This marks the second militant attack in Jammu province in the last nine days.

On October 29, Army personnel had neutralized three militants involved in an attack on an ambulance in the Battal area of Jammu district.
