CAA Protest at Jamia HIGHLIGHTS: Protest against CAA and NRC intensified after a man opened fire at the protesters near Jamia Nagar on Thursday. One Jamia student, Shadab Farooq, sustained injuries and was sent to AIIMS Trauma Centre. After the incident, heavy police deployment was made near Jamia University. Following the incident, thousands of protesters and police personnel faced off against each other near the university. The students planned to march towards Rajghat, but they were stopped near Holy Family hospital and police did not allow them to move ahead.
The person who opened fire has been booked under the 307 IPC and Arms Act.
Later, Special Commissioner of Police Praveer Ranjan met Shadab Farooq at AIIMS Trauma Centre. Speaking to media, Ranjan said: “We have checked the injured and pellet has been removed from his arm. As per doctors, he’s stable. Police couldn’t react immediately as the incident happened in split second but soon police overpowered him. Case transferred to Crime Branch.”
Commenting on the handling of the whole situation, Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar said: “It is really unfortunate that during this entire time a contingent of police stood there and just watched everything happen. I am proud that my students handled the situation very calmly.”

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh: "If any Muslim brother from Pakistan wants to come to India and stay here, then we have a provision in our citizenship act to give them Indian citizenship. We gave citizenship to 600 Pakistanis in the last 5-6 years. Still, attempts are made to stoke violence."
