At least six people, including two children, died of asphyxiation early Wednesday after a fire broke out in a house in Kathua’s Shiv Nagar area, officials said.

The blaze filled the home with thick smoke while its occupants were sleeping. Locals noticed the fire around 2.30 am and rushed to help.

The victims were taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Kathua, where six people, including two minors, were pronounced dead, officials said, as PTI reported.

“Ten people were brought to the hospital. Six were brought dead, and four others were injured,” a senior doctor at the hospital said. Preliminary investigations indicate the victims died of suffocation from inhaling smoke. No burn injuries were reported, the doctor added.

Four individuals remain hospitalised as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
