An Indian student was attacked and robbed of his phone by armed men in Chicago, US. His family has appealed to the Indian government to intervene and ensure he gets proper medical treatment.
Syed Mazahir Ali, who hails from Hyderabad, is pursuing a master’s degree at Indiana Wesleyan University in Chicago. On February 4, he was attacked by armed robbers near his West Ridge apartment, according to a report in ABC7Chicago.
Ali was seen profusely bleeding from his nose and mouth, and pleading for “help” in a video.
“Four people attacked me when I was returning home. I slipped near my house and they kicked and punched me and ran away with my phone. Please help me, please help me,” a rattled Mazahir Ali was heard saying.

In a CCTV footage, he can be seen being pursued by three of his attackers near his Chicago house.
His wife Syeda Ruquliya Fatima Rizvi, who is in India, has written to Foreign Minister S Jaishankar to ensure that he gets proper treatment.
“I am very much worried about safety and security of my husband in Chicago, USA. I request you to kindly help him in getting best medical treatment and if possible kindly make necessary arrangements so I can travel to USA along with my three minor children to be with my husband,” her letter read.
The Indian consulate in Chicago on Tuesday said that it is in touch with Ali and his wife and has assured them all possible assistance in the matter.
In a post on X, a statement by the Indian consulate in Chicago read, “Consulate is in touch with Syed Mazahir Ali and his wife in India Syeda Ruquiya Fatima Razvi and assured all possible assistance. Consulate has also contacted the local authorities who are investigating the case.”

This is the latest in a series of attacks on Indian American students in the past month. Four Indian students were found dead in various parts of the country in January 2024.
