The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued a ‘red alert’ for Assam and Meghalaya due to forecasts of extreme heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning over the next two days. The MHA has instructed both state governments to prioritise public safety.

“Due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, our flight operations are getting impacted with some diversions,” said Air India.

Heavy rainfall in the city led to waterlogging in several areas as nine more districts succumb to IMD red alert.

IMD has now placed Delhi NCR under an orange alert as very thunderstorms and lightning with gusty winds are likely to hit soon.

The udpated IMD warnings come from Gujarat where nine more districts have been warned of extremely heavy rains, thunderstorms and lightning. The 9 districts are:

3. Surendranagar

4. Morbi

5. Khera

6. Bharuch

7. Surat

8. Botad

9. Bhavnagar

The rest of the state remains under an orange alert.

Ernakulam, a district of Kerala is under an IMD orange alert with warnings of thunder storm lightning and heavy rain.

Shobhit Katiyar, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, says, “The pre-monsoon rainfall will continue in the state till June 22. Between June 20 and 22, some areas may experience heavy rainfall, for which a yellow alert has been issued. The southwest monsoon is likely to arrive in Himachal Pradesh around June 25.”

West Bengal is under the spell of heavy rainfall and gusty winds since Tuesday morning. Midnapore, Bardhaman and other districts are drenched and battling waterlogged lanes.

Ramghat Dam on Ghela river overflowed due to heavy rain in Gadhada in Botad district. Residents wait to continue travel and daily life.

Clouds covered Bhavnagar since morning, and rain has started in both the city and surrounding rural areas near Valsad. Two districts Gir Somnath and Junagarh are under an IMD red alert.

IMD reports cloudy skies with light sun over Ludhiana. Only light showers expected for the city today.

IMD predictions for weather in Shimla today feature lightning and gusty winds upto 50 kmph. A yellow alert has been issued.

Districts which usually receive rainfall barely above 1mm have received 9.9mm rainfall in the monsoon. Regions like Jodhpur, Pali, Ajmer, Nagaur, Dausa, and Jaipur among the many others report high-rainfall, thunderstorm, lightning and winds.

Kolkata is set to receive showers from the Southwest Monsoon with heavy rains, thunderstorms and gusty surface winds. There is a strong 98% of rain shower. IMD also issued a fishermen warning for the West Bengal coast for the next five days as wind speed is likely to exceed 40 kmph.

IMD predicts light showers for Mumbai residents today, June 17. The weather today will have lower temperatures after the torrential rain on Monday. Mumbai, Thane and Palghar remain on high-alert.

Regions on North-east India have been alerted by the IMD to prepare for heavy showers for today’s weather. Pakke Kessang, Papum Pare, West Siang, Anjaw, Tirap, Lunglei and Saiha are districts across Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram set to reavy heavy rains. 

The Meteorological Centre placed five out of eleven districts of Kerala under a red alert warning on June 16 as they encountered extremely heavy rains. On June 17, only two districts are under an orange alert.

Bringing a much-needed but brief respite from Delhi heat, temperatures are significantly lower. With an 81 per cent prediction of rain, thunderstorms and lightning is predicted.

As IMD predicted the return of India’s monsoon, the early onset struck Western and Northern India. Wreaking havoc with landslides in the north-east with waterlogging in Karnataka, the torrential rain in May set a steep slope for residents.
