The Indian government confirmed on Friday that discussions are underway to arrange an early visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States, aiming to strengthen the “India-US comprehensive global strategic partnership.” However, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the exact dates of the visit are still being finalised.
This announcement comes just days after PM Modi’s first phone conversation with President Donald Trump since the Republican leader assumed office for a second term. Sources indicate that the two leaders discussed bilateral ties during their exchange.
Following the call on January 27, Modi shared his thoughts on X, writing, “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”
Modi had earlier spoken to Trump on November 7, after his re-election victory. During that conversation, Trump reportedly praised Modi as a “magnificent man” and stated that the world held him in high regard. He also described India as a “magnificent country” and reaffirmed his friendship with both Modi and India. Sources suggest that the two leaders agreed to collaborate on global peace efforts.
Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, in a historic ceremony moved indoors for the first time in 40 years due to freezing temperatures. Representing India at the event was External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who attended at the invitation of the US government and delivered a letter from PM Modi to Trump.
