India has successfully test-fired a cutting-edge underwater naval mine designed to strengthen the Navy’s defense capabilities against modern stealth ships and submarines. The announcement came from the Ministry of Defence on Monday, May 5, 2025, as regional tensions continue to simmer following the Pahalgam terror attack.
“The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy have successfully undertaken combat firing (with reduced explosive) of the indigenously designed and developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM),” the defence ministry said on Monday (May 5, 2025).
The MIGM system, developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with other DRDO labs, is equipped with multiple sensors capable of detecting acoustic, magnetic, and pressure signatures produced by marine vessels. It has been designed to operate effectively in complex maritime environments.
Bharat Dynamics Limited, along with Visakhapatnam-based units and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad, are the production partners involved in the development of the MIGM.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and industry partners for the successful trial. “The system will further enhance the undersea warfare capabilities of the Indian Navy,” he said in a statement.
The test comes at a strategically important time as India strengthens its defence posture in response to growing regional threats, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.
