India Pakistan Ceasefire News Highlights: BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been in the custody of Pakistan Rangers since April 23, 2025, was handed back to India today. The exchange took place around 10:30 am at the Joint Check Post in Attari, Amritsar. The process was carried out peacefully and followed all standard procedures.

This exchange involved one soldier from each side. While Pakistan returned BSF Jawan Shaw, India handed over a Pakistan Rangers personnel who had been in Indian custody. Shaw, who belongs to West Bengal, was welcomed back by Indian officials at the border.

Meanwhile in Riyadh, US President Donald Trump once again took credit for securing what he called a “historic ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, following a period of heightened military tensions between the two countries. He explained that trade played a significant role in bringing about the ceasefire, encouraging both countries to focus on economic deals rather than military conflict. He stressed on the idea of trading goods instead of nuclear missiles, highlighting the importance of peaceful negotiations. “Let’s do some trading. Let’s not trade nuclear missiles. Let’s trade the things that you make so beautifully,” Trump said.

“Just days ago, my administration successfully brokered a historic ceasefire to stop the escalating violence between India and Pakistan, and I used trade to a large extent to do it,” Trump said while speaking to the crowd.

Trump’s reiteration of calming things down between India and Pakistan was not received well. Many political leaders went online to criticise his stance.Congress MP Karti Chidambaram said, “This narrative wasn’t part of the syllabus.”

Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US Department of State, said that the US welcomes the ceasefire between India and Pakistan and praised both Prime Ministers for choosing peace. He also expressed US’ commitment to encouraging direct communication between the two countries. When asked whether the US had received any assurance from Pakistan regarding the dismantling of terrorist infrastructure or ending support for terror groups, Pigott did not provide specific details.

‘Like many Indians, Virat is my favorite cricketer’, DGMO invokes Kohli Test retirement during presser

During a special defence briefing on the recent India-Pakistan military exchanges, DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai made an interesting analogy between cricket and military strategy, invoking the retirement of Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli. “I was watching Virat Kohli retiring from Test cricket. Like many Indians, he is my favorite cricketer,” Ghai said. Drawing a parallel to cricket history, he recalled the dominance of Australian fast bowlers Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee during the Ashes series in the 1970s, quoting a famous line, “From ashes to ashes and from dust to dust, if Thommo don’t get you, then Lillee surely must.” Ghai used the reference to illustrate the depth and layered precision of India’s operational grid, hinting that just as batters then had little escape from the Australian pace duo, adversaries now face a similarly inescapable network of Indian defence systems.

“If you look closely at the layers, you’ll understand what I mean — even if you manage to get through all of them, one layer of this grid system is bound to catch you,” he said.

India-Pak tensions live updates: Congress seeks clarification over third-party mediation on Kashmir issue

The Congress party on Monday called on Centre to clearly state whether it is open to third-party mediation on the Kashmir issue, cautioning that such a position might go against the Simla Agreement. Referring to repeated claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that he is involved in the matter, Congress said the Union government must issue a formal clarification. During a party event, AICC general secretary K C Venugopal raised concerns about a possible change in India’s foreign policy and emphasized that the issue should be discussed in Parliament without delay.
