In a significant development amid rising military tensions, US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. The breakthrough came after intense diplomatic efforts led by the United States over the past 48 hours.

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, TruthSocial. “Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”

India confirms ceasefire

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) contacted his Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM today.

During the conversation, both sides agreed to halt all military actions—on land, in the air, and at sea—effective from 5:00 PM Indian Standard Time. Misri stated that instructions have been issued to implement the ceasefire immediately.

He added that the DGMOs of both countries will hold another round of discussions on May 12 at 12:00 PM to further review the situation and ensure continued adherence to the agreement.

Rubio confirms peace talks

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio played key roles in the mediation process. Rubio confirmed the ceasefire and the commencement of broader peace talks.

“Over the past 48 hours, @VP Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik,” Rubio posted on X.

He added, “The Governments of India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire and to start talks on a broad set of issues at a neutral site.”

Rubio praised both Prime Ministers for their “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship” in opting for dialogue over conflict. The ceasefire comes after a week of escalating cross-border attacks, airspace restrictions, and drone strikes, which had raised international concerns over regional stability.
