The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced that End-of-Life (EOL) vehicles will not be allowed to refuel in Delhi. Starting July 1, this norm will apply to vehicles for any diesel vehicle older than 10 years and petrol vehicle older than 15 years.

To curb pollution levels and enforce the rule, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed at fuel stations across Delhi. CAQM member Dr. Virendra Sharma revealed that 500 ANPR cameras have been stalled at 500 station. So far, the system has filtered nearly 5 lakh vehicles among the 3.63 crore screened.

He added that 29.52 lakh vehicles have renewed their Pollution Under Control Certificates (PUCC), leading to challan issuances worth Rs 168 crore.

Apart from Delhi, this guideline is set to be enforced in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Sonipat from November 1 and the remaining of the NCR April 2026 onwards.

Increased reinforcement

To strengthen enforcement efforts, the Delhi Transport Department has deployed 100 dedicated teams to monitor vehicle data, pinpoint fuel stations with high volumes of non-compliant vehicles, and ensure strict adherence to regulations.

“It’s critical to eliminate outdated BS-standard vehicles to improve air quality in Delhi and the NCR,” said Transport Commissioner Ashish Sharma. “These vehicles significantly contribute to pollution. With a transparent, digital, and accountable system now in place, we plan to extend its use to toll centers to enhance effectiveness. Around 100 enforcement teams will be actively involved in this initiative.”
