Southern states are preparing for several days of intense showers, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing multiple alerts for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The updated warnings follow the development of a strengthening weather system over the Bay of Bengal and an active circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea. The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for several Tamil Nadu districts.

The IMD has posted on its official account on X, that a low-pressure area formed over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining South Andaman Sea on November 22. It is likely to intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal around November 24, 2025. The system is likely to bring rainfall across the southern peninsula for several days.

IMD Weather forecast for heavy rainfall

The Met Department has forecast heavy showers over Tamil Nadu from November 23-25 and over Mahe and Kerala from November 23-26. Lakshadweep may experience heavy downpours on November 23.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are forecast across Tamil Nadu, Yanam, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema from November 23-24 across Kerala, Lakshadweep from November 23-26.

Yellow alert issued for these regions

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued a yellow alert for light to moderate rainfall on November 23. It is likely to cover Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur and the Karaikal region, as per a report by ANI.

It has also been warned that rainfall could lead to waterlogging, traffic delays and slippery stretches. In Puducherry, moderate showers were reported across several urban and rural places on Sunday morning, including Beach Road, Osudu, Villiyanur and Uppalam and Kamaraj Nagar. Earlier, IMD had issued yellow and orange alerts for around 17 districts.

Kerala is likely to continue to be under widespread rain till November 26, with the Weather Department projecting 7-11 cm of rain at isolated places. As per IANS, yellow alerts have been issued across several districts for the coming four days. Kollam, Kottayam, Kollam, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki have been placed under alert on November 23.

Fishermen along the Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts have been advised not to enter the sea from Sunday to Tuesday.
