The India Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert for large swathes of Maharashtra — predicting “extremely heavy rainfall” for several areas. Several parts of Mumbai and neighbouring Thane also witnessed waterlogging amid heavy rainfall on Sunday morning. Weather forecasters have warned that the city is likely to get more than 400 mm of rainfall over the next few days.

Red alert for Mumbai?

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall over Goa, Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Gujarat State during next seven days with extremely heavy falls over Konkan (including Mumbai) and Goa, Ghat area of Madya Maharashtra during 17th -19th, Gujarat Region and during 18th-20th; Saurashtra on 19th & 20th August with peak activity on 19th & 20th August,” the IMD wrote in its latest bulletin.

The Met department has forecast “extremely heavy rainfall” over parts of madhya Maharashtra till Tuesday. Isolated to scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the Konkan area (including Mumbai) till August 20. The IMD also forecast strong surface winds (with speeds reaching 40-50 kmph) for this region.

According to the district-level forecast released by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, the entire MMR will remain under an orange alert till August 19. This has been escalated to a red alert for Palghar district on Tuesday — predicting “extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places”. The RMC forecast “heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places” in Mumbai.

Waterlogging across Mumbai, Thane

Several parts of the Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra witnessed waterlogging amid heavy rainfall on Sunday morning.In Mumbai, parts of Mahim were affected by waterlogging. The water level of Mithi River in Mumbai has also risen amid the incessant dowpour.
