A controversy erupted after Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, President of the All India Muslim Jamat, criticised Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami for not observing Roza (fasting) during Ramadan. He went as far as calling Shami a “criminal” in the eyes of Shariat (Islamic law). His remarks have drawn sharp criticism from both political and religious leaders.
Maulana’s remarks on Shami
Speaking to ANI, Bareilvi emphasised that fasting is mandatory for all healthy Muslims and skipping it violates Islamic teachings.
“One of the fundamental duties of Islam is Roza. If any healthy man or woman does not observe it, they are committing a crime. In the eyes of Shariat, they are criminals and will have to answer to God,” he stated.
He further argued that since Shami was physically fit to play cricket, he should have fasted instead of drinking water during the match. “This sends the wrong message to people,” he added.
Shami’s brother defends him
In response to the controversy, Shami’s cousin brother, Mohammed Zaid, defended him. According to Times Now report, he said: “Shami bhai is playing in Dubai. During Ramadan, if a long journey is involved, fasting can be skipped. This is not a big issue. The Maulana made this statement just for TRP.”
He also highlighted Shami’s dedication to the country, stating, “We are people who are ready to sacrifice for the nation.”
Backlash against the cleric’s remarks
The controversy erupted after India’s victory against Australia in the ICC Championship Trophy semifinal, where Shami played a crucial role, taking three wickets for 48 runs. Many leaders condemned the cleric’s remarks, arguing that religion should not interfere with sports.
NCP-SP leader Rohit Pawar also defended Shami, telling ANI: “If he feels fasting might affect his performance, he has the right to prioritize the game. He is a proud Indian who has won matches for the country.”
Additionally, Shia cleric Maulana Yassob Abbas denounced the statement as attention-seeking, stating: “Religion is not about compulsion. Many do not fast, but why single out Shami?”
