The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday (June 17) issued a red alert for Delhi and its neighboring states due to ongoing heatwave conditions. The national capital remains under a red alert, with temperatures expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius on Tuesday (June 18). Earlier, the MeT Office had warned that severe heatwave conditions will continue in Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh till June 19.

The weather forecast for Tuesday indicates mainly clear skies with heatwave to severe heatwave conditions expected at many places across Delhi. Strong surface winds are also predicted during the day. IMD has also issued a red alert for heatwave conditions in several parts of east and west Uttar Pradesh tomorrow. 

Delhi to get relief from heat

Following Wednesday, a new western disturbance is anticipated to move towards northwest India, impacting the national capital and offering respite, as per the meteorological department. Delhi is forecasted to be under a ‘yellow’ alert on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a ‘green’ alert on Friday and Saturday.

Mercury soars up to 45.2°C in Delhi

A scorching heatwave engulfed Delhi on Monday, with the mercury soaring to 45.2 degrees Celsius. Most areas in the city experienced severe heatwave conditions, as reported by the Safdarjung observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, which recorded a high of 45.2 degrees Celsius, marking a significant 6.4-degree departure from the seasonal average.

Other weather stations also reported high temperatures: Palam recorded 46 degrees Celsius, seven degrees above normal; Lodhi Road recorded 45.6 degrees Celsius; Ridge reported 46.3 degrees Celsius; and Ayanagar recorded 46.4 degrees Celsius. Najafgarh observatory registered a high of 46.3 degrees Celsius, similarly exceeding the normal by seven degrees.
