A 33-year-old software engineer allegedly strangled his wife following a fight before taking his own life in their Gurugram apartment in Sector 37D, police said on Monday. The incident is believed to have occurred between 3:00 and 3:30 pm on Sunday in Tower-7 of the Millennia-1 residential complex.
Gurugram techie sent confession video on WhatsApp
Ajay Kumar recorded a video confession admitting to killing his wife, who was also a techie at a multinational IT firm, and sent it to a WhatsApp group of friends. He also indicated his intention to end his life, HT reported.
One of the friends based in Bengaluru immediately alerted the Gurugram Police after watching the video. NDTV reported that Kumar sent the video on Sunday at 3:15 pm.
The accused, Ajay Kumar, and his wife, Sweety Sharma, got married three years ago and have since been living in Guruhram. Kumar was from Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, while his wife was a resident of Asansol, West Bengal.
Cops found coupl dead at Gurugram apartment
Gurugram Police spokesperson Sandeep Turan said they received a call at around 4:00 pm. Soon after, cops reached the location, where they found the apartment locked from the inside. They forced entry and found both of them dead in one of the rooms, HT reported.
“The woman was found on the floor with injuries to her neck, indicating she had been strangled. The husband was discovered hanging in the same room,” Turan stated.
Bengaluru friend alerted police
Investigators suspect a heated argument may have sparked the incident, though family members told police they were unaware of any marital disputes.
A senior official involved in the probe said, “In the video sent to the group chat, the husband admitted to killing his wife, apologised, and then stated he planned to take his own life. By the time his friend saw the video and called the police, it was too late.”
Police mentioned that locating the apartment took some time since the friend could only provide the name of the society and not the exact address.
Neighbours, per a report by HT, said that the couple rarely interacted with others in society and were never heard arguing.
No suicide note was recovered at the scene. The couple’s mobile phones have been seized for forensic examination. Families of the deceased arrived in Gurugram on Monday and are being questioned to determine whether the couple faced marital or professional difficulties. However, they have denied any marital disputes between them.
Police said the investigation will focus on retrieving deleted messages, call logs, and other digital records to piece together the sequence of events. While preliminary evidence points to a murder-suicide, authorities are exploring all possibilities.
