The government is preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma in the upcoming session of Parliament, PTI reported quoting government sources. The report further stated that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to initiate discussions with leaders of all major political parties to build consensus on the motion.
Justice Yashwant Varma is currently serving at the Allahabad High Court. The action follows his indictment in a suspected corruption case. The move stems from findings by a Supreme Court-appointed committee, formed by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, which indicted Justice Varma after a fire at his Delhi residence in March led to the discovery of sacks of cash in the outhouse.
Justice Varma, who denied any wrongdoing, was transferred to the Allahabad High Court and has resisted calls to resign. In light of his refusal, Justice Khanna has written to the President and Prime Minister, urging formal proceedings to ensure his removal from office through constitutional means.
