A Mumbai couple on holiday in Goa allegedly drowned on Friday after they went for a stroll on a beach, police officials have said. They were among the 14 tourists from Mumbai who went to Goa for a holiday, The Indian Express reported.

Two couples from the group went to the beach, North Goa Superintendent of Police (SP) Akshat Kaushal said. “While walking on the beach, three people were swept away by the high waves,” the SP added.

The police said that the incident took place around 11 am and they received a ‘distress call’ about three people drowning at Candolim beach in North Goa.

The locals were able to pull out one woman from the sea, while the bodies of Prakash Doshi (73) and Harshita Doshi (69), were fished out from the sea by a tourist police unit and lifeguard crew. The couple was rushed to the Candolim Primary Health Centre, however, they were declared dead-on-arrival.

Police reported that Kalpana Parekh, a 68-year-old resident of Mumbai, who was rescued, is receiving treatment at Goa Medical College. An officer stated that the bodies of the couple have been preserved at the morgue for post-mortem examinations, and inquest proceedings have been initiated.

During the monsoon season, beaches in Goa are closed to swimming and water sports. Drishti Marine, the state-appointed private lifeguard agency responsible for rescue and relief operations, has issued an advisory urging visitors to steer clear of rocky areas, cliffs, and hills along the shoreline.
