Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has stirred a political storm by alleging that Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s children are no longer Indian citizens.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Sarma said, “I have evidence that Gaurav Gogoi’s son and daughter are not Indian citizens. We are examining what he did there (Pakistan) for 15 days. There is no tourism place in Pakistan; it is only a terrorist adda. It is 100 per cent confirmed that he went there, but what did he do there in 15 days?”

These claims follow a cryptic post Sarma made on X on May 1, where he wrote, “I say this with full responsibility — the minor children of one Member of Parliament from Assam are no longer citizens of India. But this is just the beginning. There is much more yet to be revealed.” Though he did not name anyone directly, the hints pointed squarely at Gogoi.

Gogoi’s children have Pakistan links?

Earlier, on April 28, Sarma also alleged he had “clear evidence” of Gogoi’s visits to Pakistan and Nepal, promising to make details public before September. He questioned the purpose of a supposed 15-day stay in Pakistan and asked whether Gogoi’s wife receives payments from a Pakistan-based NGO for work done in India.

What Gogoi said?

Responding to Sarma’s allegations, Gaurav Gogoi issued a pointed rebuttal on X, posing three questions to the Assam CM: “1) Will you resign if you fail to prove your allegations against me and my wife being agents of an enemy country? 2) Will you take questions on your own children and wife?”

The war of words between the BJP and Congress leaders marks a sharp escalation in personal attacks in the run-up to the elections.
