A speeding car ran over pedestrians in Agra, killing five people and injuring two, police said on Saturday. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Shesh Mani Upadhyay said that five critically injured people were rushed to Sarojini Naidu Medical College on Friday night, where doctors declared all five dead, news agency PTI reported.
The deceased have been named as Babli (33), Bhanu Pratap (25), Kamal (23), Krishna (20), and Bantesh (21). Police said Bhanu Pratap worked as a parcel delivery agent for a private company.
The accident happened near Nagla Budhi, close to the Central Hindi Institute, in the New Agra police station area. Eyewitnesses said the car was speeding, hit the road divider, and then veered off, crushing people standing by the roadside.
Injuries and current condition
Seven people were hit in the accident. Five died on the spot, while Rahul and Golu are undergoing treatment, police confirmed.
A mob of furious locals dragged the driver out of his vehicle and beat him up before the police took him into custody and seized the car. Officials said the police are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol, according to a report by NDTV.
