Andhra Pradesh police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and his driver Ramana Reddy after a 65-year-old party worker was accidentally crushed under their convoy in Guntur. The incident took place on Wednesday as Jagan was heading to Sattenapalle to visit the family of a deceased party activist.
Police action and charges
On Sunday, police took Ramana Reddy into custody for questioning. Investigators are probing why the convoy failed to stop after crushing the activist Cheeli Singaiah under its wheels.
Guntur Superintendent of Police Satish Kumar said the police have gathered strong evidence. “We have conclusive proof that Singaiah was crushed under the wheels of former CM Jagan Mohan Reddy’s vehicle,” the SP confirmed. Authorities have booked Jagan, his driver Ramana Reddy, as well as former MP Y.V. Subbareddy and ex-ministers Vidadala Rajani and Perni Nani under relevant sections.
What we know about the incident
According to the police, the fatal incident occurred on the outskirts of Guntur district as Jagan and his team were headed toward Palnadu. Initially, the police had attributed the accident to a private vehicle. However, a revised investigation determined that the former CM’s convoy was involved.
The deceased activist, Cheeli Singaiah, was among a group of YSRCP workers gathered to greet the convoy. Tragically, he fell in front of the moving car and was crushed when the driver failed to halt.
Police are continuing their probe into the incident. Officials are collecting CCTV footage and eyewitness statements to ensure a thorough investigation. The accused, including Jagan and senior party leaders, face serious legal scrutiny in the coming days.
