Raipur police have registered an FIR against Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra over her alleged objectionable remarks on Home Minister Amit Shah, officials said on Sunday.
The case was filed at Mana police station on Saturday following a complaint by local resident Gopal Samanto, who accused the MP of making statements that could incite disharmony.
In a video, Moitra allegedly said in Bengali, “If Amit Shah fails to stop infiltration from Bangladesh, the first thing he should do is cut his head and put it on the table.” The remark was purportedly made on Thursday in West Bengal’s Nadia district while Moitra was speaking to reporters.
Moitra accused the government of failing to secure India’s borders and “passing the buck” on infiltration issues. The complainant said her remarks were “objectionable and unconstitutional” and created fear among Bangladeshi refugees living in Raipur’s Mana Camp area since 1971.
Authorities fear such statements could provoke tensions between communities, the police official added. The TMC leadership is yet to issue an official response.
She has been booked under sections 196 (promoting enmity between groups) and 197 (imputations prejudicial to national integration) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The TMC leadership has not issued an official comment on the FIR so far.
