The counting process began today at 8 am. Local body polls in Kerala take place every five years to elect representatives to grama, block, and district panchayats, along with municipalities and municipal corporations. This year, elections were conducted in 1,199 out of the state’s 1,200 local bodies.

Phase 1 saw a turnout of 70.9 per cent in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam, while Phase 2 recorded an even higher polling percentage of 75 per cent across Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
With both phases combined, Kerala recorded an overall turnout of 73.57 per cent, slightly below the 75.97 per cent voter participation seen in the 2020 local elections.

After the 2025 ward delimitation exercise, the total number of wards in the Kochi Municipal Corporation increased from 74 to 76, reflecting the city’s expanding population and administrative needs. In the previous local body elections held in 2020, the Indian National Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) emerged as the single largest alliance, winning 30 wards. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) closely followed with 29 seats, while the BJP secured 5 seats and independent and smaller party candidates accounted for the remaining 10.
However, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) managed to form the governing majority by gaining the support of independent councillors. M Anil Kumar of the CPI(M) became the Mayor of the Kochi Corporation in 2020.
