Delhi electricity bill rise: Residents of Delhi are likely to receive hiked electricity bills in the May-June period. The rise is expected to be between 7 and 10 percent due to a revision in the Power Purchase Adjustment Cost (PPAC) charged by discoms, officials said on Sunday, as per PTI reports.
The PPAC accounts for rising fuel costs like coal and gas, borne by power producers, which are passed on to consumers by electricity distribution companies (discoms). It is calculated as a percentage of the fixed and energy charges on a consumer’s bill. Earlier this month, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) approved PPAC recovery for Q3 of 2024-25 during the May-June 2024 billing cycle. The approved rates are 7.25% for BRPL, 8.11% for BYPL, and 10.47% for TPDDL.
A statement from URD general secretary Saurabh Gandhi criticized the manner in which DERC implemented the PPAC charges, describing it as legally flawed. “The process under which PPAC charges have been imposed on the people of Delhi by DERC is legally wrong,” he said.
Gandhi further alleged that “for the last several years, the Commission has been benefiting the power companies from other items.” Expressing disappointment with the current Commission, he added, “Now we had great hope from the Commission that has been formed that it will complete the work of tariff determination by following the prescribed procedure, but this Commission conducted a virtual public hearing where not enough time was given to the stakeholders to state their case.”
