The Election Commission on Thursday extended timeline for SIR in six states and Union territories, news agency PTI reported. The ECI announced revised timelines for the SIR of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, according to an official press release.

No extension for West Bengal, Rajasthan
According to the update shared by the Election Commission, the enumeration period for Goa, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan and West Bengal will end today. The draft rolls will be published on December 16 for these states. Meanwhile an earlier notification had indicated that the enumeration period would end of December 18 for Kerala. The southern state will see draft rolls being published on December 23. The final electoral roll will now be published on February 21 next year.
SC notice for poll body
The announcement came days after the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Election Commission of India regarding the protection of Booth Level Officers assigned to conduct enumeration duties. The notice had sought a response to a plea for the safety of these officers in light of threats and violence they were facing in the state of West Bengal. A bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi also acknowledged that BLOS are working under ‘strain and stress’ at the ground level due to high work pressure in the SIR drive.
“This is not desk work. They go to each house, verify, submit the enumeration to him (the BLO), and he uploads it. He goes from house to house for the enumeration process, then takes it and uploads it. This is the pressure they are under. Which is strain and stress,” the Court verbally stated.
