The Election Commission today announced Assembly elections in four states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Telangana will be held in single phase. Addressing the media, CEC OP Rawat informed that while polling in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram will be held on November 28, Telangana and Rajasthan will go to polls on December 7.

In Chhattisgarh, Rawat said that elections will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held on November 12 that will cover LWE hit districts. The second phase will be held on November 20.

Rawat said that counting of votes in all the five states will be held simultaneously on December 11. He said that the whole election exercise will be completed before December 15.

Election in Rajasthan, Telangana on Nov 28

In Rajasthan and Telangana, the CEC announced that elections will be held in single phase on December 7. While Rajasthan is currently ruled by the BJP, the TRS of Chandrasekhar Rao is in the power in the southern state of Telangana. Telangana was orginally scheduled to go to polls next year along with the general elections, but CM KCR dissolved the assembly and called for an early election.

Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram will be held on November 28. The BJP and Congress are the main parties in both the states. The BJP has been ruling Madhya Pradesh for the last 15 years where as the Congress in Mizoram is in power since 2008.

EC on changing time

The Election commission chairman clarified that certain compulsion forced the change in the timing of the press conference to announce the election dates. However, he declined to comment on allegations by Congress.

Assemblies in states coming to end in January 2019

The term of legislative assemblies in all the five states will expire by January 2019. Mizoram’s 50-member House expires on December 15, 2018, Chhattisgarh’s Assembly ends on January 5, 2019, Madhya Pradesh's house expires on January 7, 2019 and Rajasthan's house expires on January 20, 2019.

Allegations by Congress

The Congress on Saturday alleged that EC had delayed its scheduled press conference on account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at a public rally in Rajashthan. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, "The EC was supposed to hold a press conference at 12.30 pm to announce polls in four states. But, it was postponed to 3 pm."

Meanwhile, the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect in all the five states with immediate effect. While Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan are currently ruled by the BJP, the northeastern state of Mizoram is ruled by the Congress. The TRS of K Chandrasekhar Rao is currently in power in Telangana. The tenure of 230 members Madhya Pradesh Assembly will expire on January 7 next year where as the term of 90 members Chhattisgarh and 200 members Rajasthan Assembly will expire on January 5 and January 19 next year, respectively. The tenure of 50 members Mizoram Assembly will end on December 15.
