The Income Tax department on Tuesday carried out an extensive raid on the residence and hotels of a BJP leader and Chairman of Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sahakari Awas Sangh (MPRSAS) Sushil Vaswani in Bairagarh districts located in the outer area of Bhopal. Vaswani was the Chairman of Mahanagar Cooperative bank for about a decade while his wife Kiran is the current chairperson of the bank that has several influential persons as directors.

The BJP leader came under IT department’s radar followed by reports that he had allegedly laundered money post the demonetisation drive. With three hotels under his name, Vaswani was also the Chairman of the housing cooperative federation for five years and was the minister of state for five years. However, the leader, claimed that no illegal money was found from his house, and described it as rumours.

In a similar case in November, BJP’s youth wing secretary from Salem, JVR Arun, was arrested by Tamil Nadu police with bundles of new currency notes worth Rs 20.55 lakh. Arun was removed from the organisational responsibilities by the BJP after his arrest.

In another incident, former BJP leader Manish Sharma from West Bengal was also caught with Rs 33 Lakh in Rs 2,000 notes.

Earlier today the Income Tax department had seized Rs 10 cr in old currencies along with 6 kg gold during a raid in Chennai. As per a report by ANI, the IT department has seized the huge amount of cash and gold from a jewellery dealer of imitation jewellery located in Periamet area in Chennai.
