The Singhola Flyover on National Highway 44 in Delhi was shut for traffic on Thursday after heavy downpours developed in pothole on the route. The incident took place near Alipur police station, which came amid widespread showers and flooding in parts of Delhi, worsening congestion for commuters in the national capital.

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued an advisory on its official social media handles, confirming that a large pothole was formed on the stretch linking Mukarba Chowk to the Singhu border. For safety purposes, authorities have banned vehicles from using the damaged flyover and have directed traffic to alternate routes through Mukarba Chowk-NH44 and Bakoli Village -UER-II.

“Commuters are advised to take these roads, not park along the roadside, and follow the directive of traffic personnel for a smoother experience,” the advisory mentioned. The advisory also further stated that real-time updates would be shared on its website and official X formerly Twitter account. Police have also urged motorists to use the Delhi Metro wherever possible to avoid long delays.

Intense rains, rising Yamuna add to the crisis

Wednesday showers caused waterlogging across stretches, including Mathura Road, Krishna Menon Marg, Arjangarh, and Feroz Shah Kotla Road, resulting in a traffic snarl. The Yamuna, meanwhile, continues to flow above the danger mark and is recorded at 207 metres at the Old Railway Bridge. Last year, the river touched a record 208.66 metres.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) it is predicted to have moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms for the next four days. Officials have warned that continuous showers could further put pressure on the city’s already damaged road infrastructure.

The cave-in on NH-44, which is one of the busiest highways interlinking Delhi to Haryana and Punjab, has reinforced calls for urgent action.
