Delhi broke the highest-ever temperature record on Wednesday as mercury stands at 52 degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the capital recorded a temperature of 45.8 degrees on Tuesday under heatwave conditions. It is recorded as the hottest May day in four years. Additionally, Northwest Delhi’s Mungeshpur and North Delhi’s Narela nearly hit 50 degrees, recording maximum temperatures of 49.9 degrees Celsius yesterday.

As per recent updates, Delhi has received unexpected light rain after reaching 52.3 degrees Celsius. Before May 28, the city’s highest recorded temperature was 49.2 degrees Celsius on May 16, 2022, the highest in the past 100 years. According to DISCOM officials, Delhi’s peak power demand reached an all-time high of 8302 MW. On May 22, it had reached 8000 MW. “For 12 consecutive days in 2024, Delhi’s peak power demand has exceeded 7000 MW,” DISCOM officials told PTI.

Moreover, heatwaves are expected in the majority of North-Indian states till May 30. Afterwards, states may find some relief in the weather.
