Delhi Elections 2025: AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal is set to file his nomination for the upcoming elections from the New Delhi Assembly constituency on Wednesday, according to party officials. Kejriwal will be joined by women supporters during the filing process. Before submitting his nomination papers, he plans to offer prayers at the Hanuman Temple and Valmiki Mandir in the New Delhi area, the leaders added.

Kejriwal vs ED

It is interesting to note that ahead of Kejriwal filing his nomination, Centre gave the Enforcement Directorate (ED) the green light to initiate prosecution against him and his former deputy Manish Sisodia, in connection with the money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy scam. This decision follows approval granted by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to proceed with the prosecution.

The case centers on allegations of irregularities in the formulation of the 2021-22 Delhi excise policy, which was later withdrawn. The former Chief Minister, along with other AAP leaders, are accused of intentionally creating provisions in the policy that allegedly facilitated kickbacks from liquor lobbyists.

Delhi Elections 2025: Let the battles begin!

Having held the New Delhi Assembly seat since 2013, Kejriwal faces competition this time from BJP candidate Parvesh Verma and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit. And the drama surrounding he elections is already underway.

The ECI on Monday had directed the Delhi Police to take action against BJP candidate Parvesh Verma following complaints filed by the AAP. The move had come shortly after an AAP delegation, led by Delhi CM Atishi, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Arvind Kejriwal and MP Sanjay Singh, met with the Election Commissioner to raise their concerns. AAP has accused Verma of tampering with the voter list in the New Delhi constituency. The party has urged the ECI to thoroughly investigate the matter and take appropriate measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

Over the past decade, Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP has twice disrupted the BJP’s dominance in Delhi, overturning the saffron party’s 7-0 clean sweeps in preceding Lok Sabha elections with decisive victories in the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls.

As the 2025 election approaches, the key question is whether AAP can replicate this feat or if anti-incumbency and corruption allegations have tarnished Kejriwal’s appeal, creating an opening for the BJP to reclaim power in Delhi—a feat it last achieved in 1993. The answer will be revealed on February 8, when the results of what promises to be a high-stakes and intense electoral battle are announced.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is vying for a third consecutive term in Delhi, a city-state considered its stronghold. However, the party appears more vulnerable now than in recent years. Meanwhile, the BJP, which holds sway across much of India, has struggled to reclaim power in the capital for 26 years, having been ousted in 1998. Since then, it has not formed a state government in Delhi.

The Congress, which once dominated Delhi politics under three-term Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from 1998 to 2013, has seen its influence erode significantly. Now, it faces the uphill task of regaining its voter base from AAP to remain politically relevant in the capital.

Voting for the 70-member Delhi Assembly is scheduled to be held on February 5 and the counting of votes will be taken up on February 8.
