Delhi Assembly Election 2025: In another massive shock to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Karnail Singh has defeated AAP leader Satyendra Singh with a margin of 20998 votes in the Shakur Basti constituency.
After the 11th round of vote counting, Singh won the Shakur Basti constituency with 56869 votes. Shakur Basti is a general seat not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Jain was the sitting MLA from the seat and was eyeing his fourth term this time.
Who is Karnail Singh?
Singh is the BJP candidate for the Shakur Basti constituency. He has completed his matriculation (10th class) from SDM High School, Haryana Vidyalaya Shiksha Board, Sonipat, in 1984. Singh has declared assets worth Rs 2,59,67,36,090 (Rs 259.67 crore). He has no criminal cases against him. Singh has emerged as the richest candidate in the poll fray in Delhi with the staggering net worth, as per Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
The BJP candidate has often made headline because of his controversial remarks. He is also the head of BJP’s Temple Cell in Delhi. He has openly criticised Arvind Kejriwal, particularly over the AAP supremo’s promise to pay priests Rs 18,000 per month if re-elected. According to an NDTV report, Singh is part of the advisory board of Madhav Netralaya, an Eye Institute and Research Centre based in Nagpur. He has claimed to be the “servant of Sanatan Dharma”.
What happened in 2020 Delhi Assembly Elections?
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly Elections, AAP candidate Satyendar Jain won the seat with a margin of 7,592 votes. He was polled 51,165 votes with a vote share of 51.6 per cent. Jain defeated BJP candidate Dr SC Vats, who got 43,573 votes (43.94 per cent).
