The Centre’s panel on Delhi-NCR’s air quality reinstated Stage 3 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on Friday following a rise in pollution levels. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi climbed to 371 by 4 PM, signaling a “very poor” category, according to an official order.
Forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) predict further deterioration in air quality due to unfavorable meteorological conditions, such as low wind speeds and increased pollutant accumulation.
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), which oversees air pollution mitigation in Delhi-NCR, directed immediate implementation of Stage 3 measures to curb further escalation.
Restrictions Under GRAP Stage 3
Stage 3 entails several curbs, including:
- Construction Ban: Non-essential construction activities are prohibited.
- School Classes: Education for students up to grade V is shifted to hybrid mode, offering parents the option of online classes.
- Vehicle Restrictions: BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles are restricted in Delhi and NCR districts, with exemptions for persons with disabilities.
- Goods Vehicles: Diesel-operated medium goods vehicles adhering to BS-IV or older standards are banned from entering Delhi unless for essential services.
The reimposition of Stage 3 comes just a week after it was lifted, highlighting the region’s vulnerability to deteriorating air quality. The CAQM has urged residents to adhere to restrictions and reduce outdoor activities to minimize exposure to harmful pollutants.
