Dehradun Cloudburst Highlights: A cloudburst in Dehradun, Uttarakhand late on Monday night has caused widespread flooding, leaving streets submerged, vehicles washed away and significant damage to property. Continuous heavy rainfall swelled several rivers in the district, including the Sahastradhara, Chandrabhaga and Tamsa, overwhelming the city’s infrastructure and paralysing movement across many areas.
Relief operation begins
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami posted on X, “Some shops have been damaged due to heavy rains in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, late last night. District administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard and am personally monitoring the situation.”

The flooding of the Sahastradhara river brought debris into Dehradun’s main market, damaging shops and hotels. Several business owners reported heavy losses as water gushed into commercial areas, leaving behind mud and silt. Meanwhile, a bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun-Haridwar National Highway was damaged, disrupting traffic along one of the region’s busiest routes.

Taking stock of the situation, Dhami presented his analysis of the situation to reporters. “We are all facing a big disaster at this time, and the disaster that started on 5th August is continuing. All the roads, electricity and wires in different areas have been affected, and a lot of our resources have been invested in this,” CM Dhami said.

Tapkeshwar Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi said the river began rising rapidly around 5 am, submerging the premises in an “unprecedented” situation.
