Speaking at a conclave in New Delhi on Wednesday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stressed on the importance of having mindset of ‘Atmanirbharta‘ and how it is needed to deal with the global turbulence. He said the world is going through a period of instability and unpredictability, shaped by the Covid pandemic, ongoing conflicts, and disruptions in global trade, and that India needs a mindset of self-reliance to handle these challenges.
Jaishankar’s remarks have come amid the backdrop of Trump slapping 50% tariffs on all Indian imports. Referring to the event’s theme, ‘Invincible Spirit of India’, Jaishankar said that India has stood tall through centuries, protecting its culture, traditions, and heritage. He credited the country’s progress to the strength, resilience, and self-belief of its people, who have repeatedly overcome hardships. The event was organised by the Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism and Hospitality.
Tourism’s role in a stronger economy
Jaishankar said that countries with strong domestic demand are coping better with today’s global economic turbulence. In such times, tourism has great value because it creates opportunities in infrastructure, entrepreneurship, creativity, skills, and jobs. He added that some industries in India can boost the economy and employment as effectively.
He also highlighted India’s rich diversity and heritage, and the government’s efforts in recent years to make this heritage more visible to the world, including getting more Indian sites added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Jaishankar also pointed out that India’s long-standing values, such as seeing the world as one family and treating guests as divine, encourage openness. But in unpredictable times, the country must also focus on standing firmly on its own. Self-reliance, he said, not only helps navigate global instability but also builds self-confidence, strengthens resilience, and supports the vision of a developed India.
G20 showcased India to the world
The minister also said tourism often connects a country to the world even more effectively than diplomacy. He praised the sector for helping prepare a global workforce and enhancing India’s image abroad.
Recalling India’s presidency of the G20 in 2023, he said that PM Narendra Modi wanted every state to have a chance to present itself to the world. Conferences were held near heritage sites and scenic locations, giving foreign delegates a chance to experience India’s culture up close. Every state made the most of the opportunity, and the positive impression left on visitors, he said, strengthened India’s connection with the world and vice versa.
