Several trains were cancelled due to cyclone Remal which made landfall around midnight on Sunday. Southern parts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, witnessed heavy rainfall.

The heavy rainfall and extreme weather conditions caused extreme damage to the railway tracks

The Union Minister of Railways of India, Ashwini Vaishnaw, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, “Closely monitoring restoration of railway tracks in West Bengal after Remal cyclone!”

Cyclone Remal

With its landfall, Cyclone Remal brought heavy rain to parts of West Bengal, majorly Kolkata. After the storm subsided, disastrously damaged roads were sighted. The storm not only damaged roads, but property and life were also severely affected.

The heavy rain caused by the storm led to excessive flooding. Farmlands were submerged and people faced widespread power cuts. Homes suffered severe damage and trees were uprooted.

Train operations were also affected by waterlogging on the tracks. Flight operations and metro services were also halted. Several trains were canceled and short-terminated due to the storm.

Kolkata experienced heavy rain and gusty winds as the severe cyclonic storm made its landfall. The storm brought winds of 110 to 120 km/h, with gusts up to 135 km/h. A red alert has been issued for Murshidabad and Nadia districts, which are expected to receive 7 to 20 cm of rain on Monday. Moreover, eight districts, including Kolkata, are likely to experience thundershowers and gusty winds of 50 to 60 km/h.
