IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Tamil Nadu.

Weather officials said that heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong surface winds are expected in Chennai and three other districts on Monday, while cyclonic storm Montha is expected to lay centred at around 2.30 pm at about 600 km east-southeast of Chennai, weather officials said.

Apart from Chennai, heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected in Ranipet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram and heavy rainfall is expected in Villupuram and Chengalpattu.

The Board of Intermediate Education, Andhra Pradesh, has announced the closure of all educational institutions in several districts from October 27 to October 31.

Educational institutions in the following 11 districts have been ordered to suspend classes:

The Puri district administration has restricted tourist entry to sea beaches on October 27, 28, and 29.
Authorities have urged visitors to avoid venturing into the sea as high tides and strong winds are expected to intensify over the next 48 hours. “The safety of visitors is our top priority. We request all tourists to comply with the beach restrictions until the situation normalises,” an official said.

As Puducherry is on orange alert, dark clouds can be seen over the Union Territory.

Andhra Pradesh is on red alert as Cyclone Montha is expected to make landfall there. In addition to this, several states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat are on orange alert.

It will make landfall near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam on the evening or night of October 28, IMD said.

Met Department’s latest update

“It is likely to continue to move northwestwards over southwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the next 12 hours and then north-northwestwards and intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28 morning,” said an official release from the Met Department.

Several districts of Telangana are on red alert in Layashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad districts of Telangana.

The Met Department has issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu.

Odisha Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari confirmed that the state is fully prepared for the approaching Cyclone Montha.

“The Odisha government has prepared extensively for the impending cyclone, which is currently 930 kilometres away from the Odisha coast and moving towards the west and northwest. Eight districts of the state have been identified as highly vulnerable… We reviewed readiness with officials, identifying vulnerable points, and alerting relevant departments such as energy, PR, RD, health, and agriculture… Cyclone centres, relief centres, and plot centres are ready… The water resources department has started releasing water from reservoirs,” Pujari said. Andhra Minister N Manohar said the action plan before Cyclone Montha covers stock positioning of Public Distribution System (PDS) commodities, fuel inventory management, food supply to relief shelters and post-cyclone relief distribution.

“The Andhra Pradesh government has prepared an action taken report detailing the pre-cyclone preparedness measures for Cyclone Montha, ensuring readiness before landfall,” Manohar said in an official release late on Saturday.

The supply of food grains to all fair price shops in coastal areas shall be completed by October 26 and sufficient stock is already placed at Mandal Level Stock Points, he said.
