The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that Cyclonic Storm Fengal is set to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the evening of November 30. The cyclone is expected to bring wind speeds of 70-80 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 90 kmph, causing widespread concern in the region, reports ANI.
Cyclone Fengal’s Path and Current Position
As of the latest updates, Cyclone Fengal is located over the southwest Bay of Bengal, moving west-northwestwards at a speed of 10 kmph. The storm’s coordinates are 12.3°N latitude and 80.7°E longitude, approximately 100 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 100 km southeast of Chennai.
The IMD predicts that the cyclone will move westwards and make landfall close to Puducherry. A potential slowdown in its movement is anticipated as it approaches the coastline. Doppler weather radars at Chennai and Sriharikota, along with satellite data, are being utilized to monitor the system closely.
Expected Wind Speeds and Rainfall
The IMD forecasts wind speeds ranging between 70-90 kmph in coastal areas from Tiruvallur to Mayiladuthurai during landfall. On Sunday, the Tiruvallur to Nagapattinam districts are expected to experience reduced wind speeds of 50-70 kmph.
In addition to strong winds, the cyclone has brought heavy rainfall to several parts of Tamil Nadu. Chennai witnessed incessant rains, leading to waterlogging in areas like New Washermanpet, the Gemini Flyover, and Mount Road. Vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, faced difficulties navigating ankle-deep waterlogged streets.
Preparations and Precautionary Measures
Government Action
Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and Chief Minister MK Stalin reviewed the state’s preparedness ahead of the cyclone’s landfall. Relief camps have been set up in vulnerable areas, and continuous inspections are being conducted to mitigate the impact. The Chief Minister also engaged with district collectors of affected regions via video conferencing to assess on-ground conditions.
Advisories and Restrictions
Authorities have issued advisories to fishermen, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea due to high waves and rough sea conditions. Residents have been cautioned to stay away from beaches such as Marina Beach, Pattinapakkam, and Edward Elliot’s Beach. Tourist spots in Puducherry have also been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.
Impact on Chennai and Surrounding Areas
Chennai has borne the brunt of Cyclone Fengal’s approach, with strong winds uprooting trees and causing significant waterlogging in low-lying areas. Officials have been deployed to clear uprooted trees and debris from roads to ensure smoother traffic flow. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next two to three days, according to the IMD.
Aviation and Transportation Updates
The cyclone has disrupted air travel, with airlines issuing travel advisories due to heavy rainfall in Chennai. Passengers have been advised to check flight schedules before heading to the airport.
Monitoring and Long-Term Preparedness
The IMD continues to monitor Cyclone Fengal using advanced technology, including Doppler weather radars and satellite imagery. Officials emphasise that safety protocols are in place to address the storm’s impact and to ensure rapid relief measures for affected populations.
As Cyclone Fengal makes its way toward the coast, authorities and residents remain on high alert, working together to minimize potential damage and ensure the safety of those in its path.
