Is COVID again rising in India?

According to the latest state-wise data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Kerala and Maharashtra are witnessing the highest surge in COVID-19 cases.

Kerala has reported a total of 430 cases, including 335 new infections — the highest single-day tally among all states. Maharashtra follows with 210 confirmed cases, 154 of which are new.

Delhi has also seen a notable rise, recording 99 new cases and pushing its total count to 104. Other states such as Gujarat, Karnataka, and Haryana have also registered an uptick in infections, reflecting a nationwide upward trend in COVID-19 cases.

Health authorities have intensified surveillance and are urging the public to follow preventive measures, especially in states showing higher transmission rates. Experts continue to emphasise vaccination, mask usage, and testing as key tools in containment.

Health officials remind the citizens that the situation is under control and to not panic. The transmissibility and the effectiveness of the existing vaccine on these variants are under close monitoring.

How long did COVID last in India?

In the pandemic era starting March 2020, India experienced two unfortunate waves of the COVID-19 virus. Kerala was the first state to report over 30 cases. Lasting for more than two years, COVID-19 cases in India claimed more than 5,00,00 lives. Coming to a complete halt, all industries were struck badly. With businesses shutting down to economies, the pandemic-era was truly a challenging time for all.

What strain of COVID is going around now?

The current strain of the COVID-19 virus as reported by INSACOG data, are protein mutations of the JN.1 virus. Initial research indicates that the NB.1.8.1 variant could be more transmissible than previous strains, likely due to its stronger binding ability to human cells. To date, 58 genome sequences of NB.1.8.1 have been submitted to the global COVID-19 database, originating from 22 different countries. The NF.7 variant was observed largely in southern parts of India and both NB.1.8.1 and NF.7 have been reported largely from urban metro cities. However, international cases from the US have also reported high communicability.

What are current COVID symptoms in 2025?

The current symptoms of COVID-19 in India in 2025 are observed to be mild and subtle. As per the recent reports published by WHO, the NB.1.8.1 poses a low global health risk. However, some common symptoms have been identified as sore throat, fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches, nasal congestion, low-grade hyperthermia, headaches, nausea and gastrointestinal issues.

Experts advise to take a rapid antigen home test or RT-PCR if these symptoms persist beyond 3-4 days. It has also been warned to avoid crowded places as an extra measure of caution. As of now, there are 7 deaths reported so far from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Kerala but doctors signal underlying conditions as major cause of death.
