Congress said it will launch a nation-wide agitation on July 22 against PM Narendra Modi led government for its alleged failures to fulfil electoral promises.
“It has been more than a year since the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) achieved the feat of getting a majority on its own. Narendra Modi, who had mobilized public opinion in his favour by making huge promises on one hand and blaming every ill in the country on the Congress-led UP on the other. But, His tenure has been marked by his deafening silence amid scandal after scandal that his party is embroiled in,” Congress national spokesperson Rita Bahuguna Joshi told reporters here.
“On July 22, we will be staging demonstrations across all districts in the country wherein we will be explaining to the people how they were being taken for a ride by those who had secured their votes,” Joshi said.
“We would do so with the hope that the government shows some sense of responsibility and the Prime Minister breaks his silence on the myriad burning issues facing the nation”, she added.
Joshi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying he was busy in clicking selfies even as his party leaders were found to be involved in Lalit Modi controversy.
“The PM appears to be busy clicking selfies at a time when the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj is being accused of having helped Lalit Modi who is a fugitive. He also has been keeping mum over the close links with the former IPL Commissioner which Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia is said to have,” she said.
She also questioned PM’s silence over the ongoing multi-crore Vyapam scam.
“And we are yet to hear anything from him on the Vyapam scam of Madhya Pradesh which besides involving financial irregularities, has claimed so many lives in its trail,” Joshi said.
She further alleged that failures of the Central government are endless.
“The list of failures of this government seems endless. Ex-servicemen are feeling cheated over the one-rank one-pension scheme. Those hoping a miraculous recovery for the economy are watching with despair an ever-falling rupee and an ever-plummeting sensex. Exports have dwindled while prices of essential committees like pulses have spiraled out of control”, she alleged.
Criticising the Centre’s foreign policy, Joshi said no body has any idea of what is going on between India and its neighbouring countries- China, Pakistan.
“Even on the foreign policy front, the new government has left much to be desired. The PM today announced that he would visit Pakistan next year to attend a SAARC meeting. What is going to be on his agenda nobody has an idea. Pro-Pakistan insurgents, who were in disarray while UPA was in power, seem to have re-consolidated themselves. This is happening when the BJP is sharing power in Jammu and Kashmir,” Joshi said.
“Modi has been so upbeat about his bonhomie with China. But we are yet to know what he has achieved by that. Soon after his visit to China, the neighbouring country started building infrastructure in territory which so far both sides had been conceding as disputed. As if this was not enough, we now have Beijing’s embarrassing stand on Pakistani militant Lakhvi”, she added.
Joshi, meanwhile, said that Congress might not have the numbers in the Lok Sabha but it would speak up on behalf of the people of the country.
“Our party’s presence in the Lok Sabha may have shrunk to a great extent. But we have nevertheless decided to speak up on behalf of the people who had elected a new government to power with great hopes but are now disappointed and feeling despair”, the Congress leader said.
