The Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has officially proposed the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. The nomination has been forwarded by him through a letter addressed to the Union Law Ministry. CJI Chandrachud has stated in the letter that since he will be retiring on 10 November, Justice Khanna should be considered for the role. CJI Chandrachud stated that since he will retire on November 10, Justice Khanna is proposed to take over the role.

Once the government approves, Justice Khanna will take over as 51st Chief Justice of India and is expected to be on the post for six months till his retirement on 13 May, 2025.

Who is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?

The nomination follows the tradition where the outgoing Chief Justice suggests the next most senior judge as their successor, subject to confirmation by the Union government. Justice Sanjiv Khanna started his legal career by enrolling with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983. He did his initial practice at the Tis Hazari district courts and further moved to the Delhi High Court and other tribunals. He was then appointed to the post of additional judge of the Delhi High Court in the year 2005 and later he held the post as permanent judge for the same year. Khanna was then promoted to Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 January 2019.

CJI Chandrachud was born on 11 November 1959 and has a remarkable career as the 50th Chief Justice of India, he has been serving on the post since last November 2022. He later joined as a Supreme Court judge in 2016. CJI Chandrachud has also given his services as a judge in the Bombay High Court and as Chief Justice of the Allahabad Court. He has been credited for several high-profile cases like abolishing Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, same-sex marriage, Sabrimal, and electoral bond scheme.
