Chhattisgarh Assembly Election Result 2023: In what is being seen as a surprise, the ruling Congress, which was anticipating a comfortable win in the state Assembly election, is trailing behind BJP in 42 seats while being ahead in 37 out of the 90 seats.

Congress candidate and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is trailing in the high-stakes Patan Assembly seat, while Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo is leading in the Ambikapur seat in a neck-and-neck battle in Chhattisgarh.

According to the first trends, Bhupesh Baghel’s nephew Vijay Baghel, a Lok Sabha BJP MP representing Durg is leading from his constituency.

BJP crosses majority mark

The Election Commission data reveals that BJP is ahead in 48 seats, two ahead of the majority mark of 46, while Congress is leading in 38 seats in the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly.

Counting of votes in elections to the 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly started at 8 am on Sunday, with security personnel maintaining a strict vigil in counting centres in the state’s 33 districts, a poll official said.

The elections were held in two phases on November 7 and 17. Voter turnout stood at 76.31 per cent. As many as 1,181 candidates are in the fray, including Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Deputy Chief Minister T S Singh Deo (both from Congress) and former CM Raman Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In the early trends, the BJP has an edge in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, while Congress takes the lead in Telangana. As the Assembly results are being billed as a semi-final of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, all eyes are on the fight between the Congress and the BJP. 

As per data available with a leading TV channel, BJP is leading on 162 seats in MP, 54 seats in Chhattisgarh and 107 in Rajasthan, while Congress is leading in 65 seats in Telangana.
