The raids conducted by the Chennai Police at a popular pub on Sunday night for operating beyond designated hours, covered by several news channels including Thanthi TV, Polimer News, and NewsTamil 24×7, among others, were possibly guided by an ulterior motive, possibly instigated by a media person seeking retribution against the pub’s management.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday night at 11:30 pm when a few people reportedly reached the place in a drunken state. The pub refused to welcome them and did not take their order as it was already closing time for pubs operating in the city.
The group questioned the presence of other patrons inside the pub, to which the pub staff clarified that these individuals were either awaiting their cabs or concluding their pre-cut-off drinks. An altercation ensued between the group and the pub staff, with threats reportedly issued.
As per sources, concerned for their safety, the pub management sought police protection upon noticing local TV crews arriving, seemingly directed by the intoxicated group. Simultaneously, media personnel informed the police about the alleged extended operating hours of the pub.

Criticism was levelled against the TV channels for attempting to film female guests without consent and making ‘misogynistic’ remarks regarding their attire. Disturbing visuals depicted women fleeing the pub, concealing their identities.
Authorities have brought the matter to the attention of the city police commissioner, denouncing the misuse of ‘media power’ for personal agendas despite no formal complaints from the affected women.
Additionally, police have assured that action will be taken upon receiving any such complaint of harassment by media personnel. They also told Indian Express that no pub in charge was arrested, contrary to what was reported by some channels.
